If the battery light in your car comes on just when you start your vehicle, that is a standard system test. If it stays on while you are driving, then there’s a problem. If you are having battery issues, you may see that the headlights are getting dim, the stereo might not turn on, and the windows might be moving slower. If you notice any of these things happening, you really need to get to your destination or bring it here to us ASAP because your vehicle is in imminent risk of being inoperable. If neither place is available, find a safe place to park.
Like most things car-related, how long you can continue to drive with the car battery light on truly depends on a lot of factors. If the light just turned on, then you can help mitigate the problem by switching off all accessories such as the radio or heater and disconnecting any cellphones that may be charging. This may help prolong the remaining battery charge, but you should still try to come straight here or head back home. Keep in mind that you should NOT turn off the engine because a dying battery won’t have the power to restart.
