As a driver, one of the worst feelings is when you notice your car shake when driving. Is it a nail in the tire, did a pothole hurt my suspension, or did I break the driveshaft? There are several things that might be the reason the car is shaking, and the severity of the potential damage can vary greatly. The most probable cause of the shaking usually happens in the vicinity of your rims and tires. The rims and tires plant your car to the road, and if anything is a bit wonky, will notice. If you got different tires recently, your vehicle shuddering could be from the tires that were not balanced correctly. Tire balancing is making sure the tire and wheel weight is. If you feel the tire shaking while you are driving, it could very well be a tire that is no longer balanced. If you can confirm that the new tires and wheels are properly balanced, but your car is still shuddering, ensure the tire pressure is correct, and be sure to check if the lugnuts are completely tightened and make sure the tire pressure is correct. If your tires are the cause of the shake, you should get it checked out immediately.
If the car shudders when you brake, that’s a pretty strong signal that you should have the brakes checked out. The most obvious reason for your steering wheel shake is worn rotors. When a driver presses the brake pedal, brake pads squeeze the brake rotors to create friction which will then stop your car. A smooth rotor surface offers smooth braking. A warped surface will cause shudders when braking, kind of like how a brick road feels bumpier than an asphalt highway.
